Chapter 6

The tray of food that Charlie brought down had foie gras, sushi rolls, and champagne.

“This seems extravagant for a prisoner,” I said.

“You’re not a prisoner, Aurora,” he said. “You’re a guest and we insist on your continued occupation in our basement.”

“Why don’t you call me Rory?” I asked. “You used to. Is it because of this daughter of the stars thing? It’s Rory. Aurora is too posh and I’ve always hated it.”

He pushed one of the plates of foie gras toward me. The smell was intoxicating. I cut off a piece and took a bite. It melted in my mouth with a hint of apple and brandy taste. I took a sip of the champagne. He had the shots of vodka lined up in front of me, but I ignored them. He drank some of his alcoholic blood.

“You should be proud of your name. It’s part of the myth,” he said.

“I hate my name and I hate the myth,” I said. “It’s why I’m here locked in your basement, isn’t it?”

He shifted his body. “All you have to do is use your powers. And then you can leave.”

“And let all of the vampires in the world kill and slaughter everyone?” I asked.

“The beheadings aren’t us,” he hissed. He ran his fingers through his hair, relaxing again. “Or at least not my coven. We’ve been sucking blood fine without having to murder anyone. The girls come willingly and the men come with the expectation of becoming part of the frat. It’s low confidence with the girls and too much confidence with the men.”

I ate more of the foie gras. My parents had to work hard for every meal they put on the table. We only went out to eat for birthdays and some holidays. This tasted better than all of those meals put together. I took a shot of the vodka and gulped it.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Orchid or Charlie had killed a few people,” I said. Sam shrugged.

“They’re both all talk,” he said. “We aren’t animals like some of these other creatures. We suck blood instead of eating bodies because it’s less of a mess. We don’t like messy.”

“Oh, well, thank God you’re not killing people because you don’t want to get your Armani dirty,” I muttered. I put down the fork. I had the feeling like something was fluttering inside my stomach. It felt like powder was floating around inside me and then bursting like fireworks.

“Are you okay, Aurora?” Sam asked. I peeked over at him. He was...beautiful, refined, powerful but tender. He tilted his head, staring into my eyes. He shook his head. “Son of a bitch. Cameron!”

When Cameron ran down the stairs, it was like he was in slow-motion. He bounded down the stairs, his feet only lightly touching the steps. He seemed to float toward us, smooth and elegant.

“Did you put pixie dust in the food?” Sam hissed to Cameron. Cameron laughed. His laugh sounded like it was underwater. I laughed too. This made Cameron laugh harder.
